Strawberries are in and done! In two days we planted over 40,000 strawberry plants so we are definitely looking forward to the weekend. We have four varieties of strawberries for the 2018 season. Sweet Charlie, Camarosa, and Chandler are coming back for another year and we are adding Ruby June to our strawberry family.
Ruby June is a brand new variety which has only been around for a few years. In trials it has proven to grow very well in the southeast making dark colored, firm berries with an extra sweet flavor. If you picked with us last year, think about a mixture of Camarosa and Sweet Charlie with the dark look of a Camarosa and the flavor of a Sweet Charlie. If what I’ve read is true, they should really be something. Can’t wait to try them!

We are also going to try an experiment this year to see if we can’t get some early strawberries. It occurred to us that we happen to have a greenhouse… Why not use it?! We planted 100 strawberry plants in the greenhouse to see if we can’t get some strawberries earlier in the season. Maybe by January??? We really don’t know but it’ll be interesting to see. Keep up with our blog and social media to see how it’s going.

Meanwhile, back in the old field, we still have some pumpkins, okra and tomatoes coming in daily! The tomatoes are looking as good as ever so if anyone wants to can some veggies for the winter come and get them before the cold weather hits!
