Last week we started picking some buckets of our early variety Sweet Charlie. Sweet Charlie seems to be a customer (and employee) favorite. It has a very sweet taste, bright red and usually more round compared to the other varieties. I think the real draw to the variety is that it matures a couple weeks early...
The other varieties that we grow are Camarosa, which are darker colored and less sweet but very hardy of bad weather, and Chandler, which is large and has been described to look like a baseball mitt. Chandlers are the most popular strawberry variety in the country. Most of the time, if you see a strawberry in the store or on a roadside stand, you can almost guarantee it’s a Chandler; or at least that some are nearby.
This year we did plant one new variety called Ruby June. They are supposed to be a semi-early berry, the size of a Chandler, the firmness of a Camarosa, and the sweet flavor of a Sweet Charlie. Sounds too good to be true but I really hope that it is! Come try them all and see which is your favorite! We are now selling our strawberries pre-picked at our store. Pick your own is not yet available but it will be opening very, very shortly.
Our spring onions are looking quite energetic too. The cold never bothered them anyways. They powered right through all this up and down weather we have been having and look to be right on track to be ready with the pick-your-own strawberries. I tried one straight out of the field the other day and it was delicious!
We are gearing up for yet another sweet strawberry season!
