Well,
we finally finished strawberries for the year. I almost want to put an
exclamation point at the end of that statement because it’s been such a long
and tiring season, but strawberries are one of our favorite crops, so I can’t
be too excited.
Our strawberry season this year lasted over 11 weeks! We
picked our first strawberries on March 17th and picked our last
buckets on June 4th. That’s a long season! Hopefully everyone had a
chance to come out and enjoy our delicious berries.
Now
that the strawberry plants have stopped producing, we are in the process of
replacing strawberries with pumpkins. Yes that’s right, we’re going to be
growing some pumpkins this year! Strawberries end at the perfect time of year
for pumpkins to be planted. That makes it easy on us as farmers. When the
strawberries are done, we get them out of the field and plant some pumpkins in
their place.
We
also began harvesting some fresh cucumbers and squash out of the field. No more
early greenhouse vegetables, we are in prime season now!
Tomatoes
are on their way as well. Nothing is ripe yet, but there are some little green
ones hanging off the plants. Shouldn’t be too much longer now. There are still
a few more tomato plants to be planted so we should have a nice, long tomato
season as well.
Keeping us the busiest are the onions. We planted some
onions late in the season last year to let them overwinter and be ready in the
spring. Then we planted some more in early spring to be ready later. Well, as
luck would have it, all of the onions came ready at the same time. We have been
very busy pulling onions, drying them and bagging them. If you want some fresh,
local onions you don’t have to look much farther than Piedmont Produce. We have
plenty!
We are definitely keeping busy over here on the farm. Don’t
forget to connect with us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to keep up with
all the happenings.
